Hello,

For IAS preparation , the subject group in 11th is not very strict. The UPSC exam allows students from any stream – Science, Commerce, or Arts.

If your son is good in Science and History , you can choose based on his long-term interest:

  • Science group : Good if he also wants options like engineering, medicine, or research. Later, he can do graduation in Science, Engineering, or even shift to Humanities for IAS.

  • Humanities/Arts group : Best suited for IAS, as subjects like History, Political Science, Geography, and Economics are part of the UPSC syllabus.

  • Commerce group : Also possible, but not as directly helpful for IAS syllabus.

For degree, students from any stream can clear IAS. But most prefer BA in subjects like History, Political Science, Economics, or Geography , as they overlap with UPSC syllabus.

Hope it helps !

Hey! For History and Civics, some chapters are always more important from the exam point of view.

In History, focus more on the Indian National Movement (1857 Revolt, Non-Cooperation, Civil Disobedience, Quit India, Partition & Independence). These topics are very scoring. Apart from that, Rise of Nationalism in Europe and chapters on World Wars, Dictatorships, UNO and NAM are also high-weightage.

In Civics, chapters like Outcomes of Democracy, Political Parties, Gender–Religion–Caste, and Judiciary are frequently asked in exams. You should also pay attention to Union Legislature and Powers of the President, as they are repeated often.

So, if you want to prepare smartly, start with these important chapters first and then revise the remaining ones later.
